This historical fiction book is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz focusing on Aunt Em before Dorothy arrives in Kansas.  Set during the 1920s and 1930s Dust Bowl, the story follows Emily as she leaves Chicago for a new life in Kansas with her husband, Henry, and later takes in her orphaned niece, Dorothy, exploring themes of family, duty, and finding home amidst hardship.
